Ninety years ago, when Toastmasters founder, Dr. Ralph C. Smedley held the first meeting in the basement of a YMCA in Santa Ana, Calif., USA, only a few people showed up. Now, with membership exceeding 313,000 in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries, Toastmasters International continues to build on Dr. Smedley’s foundation of teaching public speaking and leadership skills.
Clubs around the world will celebrate Toastmasters’ 90th anniversary with special meetings. Locally, Shropshire Speakers hosted a free open house meeting on the 29th October at Shropshire Chamber of Commerce.
Guests were invited to see how Toastmasters could benefit them with improving their speaking and presentation skills. Table topics was won by guest Julieann, who picked the object a boxing glove to recall a tale of her children who use to play fit to a game they fondly called cow muck. The aim of the game was to wrestle on the bed and not fall off as this area was referred to as “cow muck”.
