The Youth Leadership Programme (YLP) opens up a unique learning opportunity for both students and Toastmasters. It offers under 18’s of any ability the skills to find their voice, from Toastmasters that were once upon a time in their shoes.
The YLP is a structured Youth Leadership Programme for under 18’s, offering them a real opportunity to develop and increase their confidence in presentation skills and leadership.
Shropshire speaker members Sam Warner and Phil Bradley ran a 10 week course before Christmas with a cohort of 15 year 11 students at Madeley Academy developing their public speaking and leadership skills. Follow the link to see how the programme was received at the school. More schools are keen to be involved.
The Youth programme is structured much like Toastmasters a broad outline is shown below:
Youth Leadership Programme – How it Works
The program is presented in ten sessions during or after school, or on weekends. Each session usually lasts one to two hours. Activities taking place in the sessions include the following:
- Discussion of chairmanship principles
- Presentation of speeches
- Impromptu talks
- Group evaluation
- Discussion of speech organization
- Discussion and practice in listening
- Discussion of gestures in speaking
- Discussion of voice and vocabulary
- Exercise in chairmanship
Generally, meetings follow a format similar to that of a Toastmasters club meeting. There is an announced agenda and participants learn and practice parliamentary procedure during each meeting. Lecturing is minimal, but discussion is held during each session. Participants, working from a handbook, select officers who preside over the meetings. The remaining class members are assigned other duties on a rotating basis, so everyone is actively involved. Participants also deliver short impromptu and prepared speeches. In every meeting, participants learn to apply the principles of listening, thinking and speaking.
This was a new experience for the students at Madeley Academy and our members also enjoyed delivering the training all in all a win-win. Contact Shropshire speakers if you would like more information.
